Please note:
The Bachelor’s degree programme in Physics at TU Dortmund University is taught entirely in German. The introductory courses and self-tests are therefore also held in German.
As entrants – in German also known as “Ersties” – there are a few things you will have to deal with in the weeks leading up to your studies. We will try to give you a brief overview first.
Before we even start with the procedures, you should first of all enrol, i.e. register for your degree programme. This is probably possible at TU Dortmund University until October 6, 2024. However, your actual information events and our orientation programmes start a little earlier. In general, the beginning can be a bit overwhelming, so you can quickly lose track of things, but that’s probably how each of us felt, so you can and should sign up for our first semester mailing list, which we use to forward information to you first-semester students. As soon as you have received your “@tu-dortmund.de” e-mail addresses from the university, you can also sign up for our “real” mailing list using your university e-mail address.
Once you have successfully matriculated, you can take part in the programmes. The first step is the compulsory maths self-test on the faculty website. You do not have to “pass” this test, it merely serves as a self-assessment of how fit you are for the upcoming semester in the basic mathematical techniques. This test is then followed by a large programme offered by the faculty, namely the so-called preliminary courses.
The pre-courses not only serve as a potential refresher course if you did less well in the test, they also serve to practise new basics specifically for the coming semester. Regardless of how well you did in the test, participation in certain preliminary courses is recommended in any case. You can find more information on this really important topic on the Pre-courses page or under the “Entrants” -> “Pre-courses” tab.
Our orientation programme, or orientation phase, runs after or parallel to the preliminary courses. During this time, we provide you with important information for the first period of your studies. We will also take you on a day tour of the campus, organise small games evenings and many other small events so that you can get to know your future fellow students and us better. You may also be able to make contacts with higher semesters, which will give you an insight into your future studies. You can find more information on the orientation phase page.
This would roughly be the schedule for the few weeks before you actually start your studies, but even we can forget something, so be sure to check the faculty website to make sure you don’t miss any other events. You can usually also find our events in our calendar.
Please subscribe to our email distribution list so that you don’t miss anything important. Also take a look at the sidebar, on the right under “Social Media” on Instagram or our Telegram group, where we also actively distribute information!
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to send us an e-mail to “fs.physik@tu-dortmund.de“! If you would like to reach a specific contact person, you will find all relevant contact information in the Contact section.
